IUD Placement

At VIA, we offer the placement of intrauterine devices (IUDs), both copper and hormonal. We take the time to thoroughly discuss the IUD placement appointment. However, the actual placement is a quick procedure.

We perform IUD placements starting from 10 weeks after childbirth. If you have never given birth but would like to have your IUD placed by us, you are more than welcome! Please call our assistant to schedule an appointment or register via the registration form. If you wish to have an IUD, we first schedule a (telephone) consultation. During this, we determine which type of IUD is best for you, provide additional information, and answer your questions. After this we can schedule an appointment for your IUD placement.

Practical information
  • A hormonal IUD provides protection against pregnancy for 5 years (Kyleena) to 8 years (Mirena). A copper IUD offers protection for 10 years.
  • IUD placement is covered by your health insurance. The IUD itself is usually at your own cost. Please inquire about this with your health insurer.
  • We order the IUD via the contraception portal. You will receive a payment link by email, and once the payment is made, the IUD is sent to us. This way, the IUD is ready for you at the appointment.
  • Up to 2 to 3 months after placement, irregular bleeding and cramps may occur as side effects. If you have persistent complaints after this period, please contact us.
  • Take a pregnancy test before the IUD placement if there is a possibility that you are pregnant at the time of placement.
  • If there is a possibility that you have an STD, get tested through your general practitioner or order one online.
Follow-up appointment

Four to six weeks after the IUD placement, we offer the option for a follow-up appointment. During the check-up, we use a (vaginal) ultrasound to ensure the IUD is in the correct position. After this check, your IUD can remain in place for 5-10 years (depending on the type of IUD).

IUD Removal

You can also come to us to have your IUD removed. If you want to have a new IUD placed immediately, we can combine this in one appointment. If you wish to remove your IUD because you (again) have a desire to conceive, we also offer the option to combine a preconception consultation with the removal of the IUD.
