(Breast)feeding

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding has many benefits for both your baby and your own health. The antibodies in breast milk protect your baby against infections and reduce the risk of allergies. Children who have been breastfed are also less likely to develop heart disease and diabetes later in life.

If you breastfeed, you often return to your pre-pregnancy weight more quickly, experience less blood loss during the postpartum period, and have a lower risk of conditions such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, and ovarian cancer. The longer you breastfeed, the smaller the risk.

Formula

Formula feeding is a good alternative if you cannot or choose not to breastfeed. The most important thing is that you, as a mother, do what feels right for you and your baby. The brand of formula you choose doesn’t matter; European guidelines describe the conditions that formula must meet. Formula for babies aged 0 to 6 months is called ‘complete infant formula.’ If this term is on the packaging, it contains all the nutrients your baby needs during this period.

Renting or buying a breast pump

In the first days after childbirth, we, along with your maternity nurse, will assess how breastfeeding is going. The initial period of breastfeeding is intensive as the baby learns to latch, and your milk production begins. The baby will typically be weighed on days 4 and 7. It is normal for a healthy baby to lose weight during the postpartum week.

If a breast pump is needed in the first week after childbirth, we will recommend renting one. Rental breast pumps are generally better at establishing milk production. A personally purchased breast pump is good for maintaining an existing milk supply. You can rent a breast pump 24/7 at various locations in Amsterdam.
