21-30 weeks

You are now over halfway through your pregnancy! The baby is growing, and you will start feeling the baby’s movements more distinctly. In some women, you may even be able to see the baby’s movements on the outside of the belly when you look at it.

From 28 weeks onward, you enter the third trimester of pregnancy. You will begin to recognize a pattern in your baby’s movements. If you ever do not feel the baby move or notice a significant decrease in movement, always call the midwife.

Appointments with the midwife

Your appointments with the midwife will become more frequent. From 24 weeks of pregnancy, you will have a check-up every 3 weeks instead of every month. During this period, we may recommend taking blood tests again, depending on your specific situation. The midwife will provide information on the type of blood tests recommended. We assess the baby’s growth, position, and engagement in your pelvis by assessment by hand on your belly. We closely monitor if these factors align with the number of weeks of your pregnancy. If necessary, additional ultrasounds may be performed.

Whooping cough (Pertussis) vaccination

During pregnancy, you can receive a whooping cough vaccination starting from 22 weeks. This vaccination provides the baby with initial protection against whooping cough. The 22-week vaccination ensures that the baby is protected from whooping cough from birth until it receives its own vaccinations postpartum. The baby’s first vaccination will then occur 3 months after birth instead of the usual 2 months.

Childbirth class

There are various courses available during pregnancy to prepare for childbirth. Knowing what to expect during labor, understanding your options, and practicing specific breathing techniques can provide peace of mind and confidence during childbirth. During your appointment with the midwife, we will discuss the various childbirth class options. As a practice, we can enroll you, if desired, for the free childbirth class offered by “Rondom de Geboorte“.

Choice for breast- or bottle feeding

It is important to already consider during pregnancy what feeding method you prefer for your baby. While breastfeeding has many advantages, the most important thing is to make a choice that suits you. If you plan to breastfeed, it can be helpful to prepare in advance by reading about breastfeeding and/or attending a breastfeeding workshop. We will provide more information during your midwife appointment. Click here, for more information about breastfeeding and bottle feeding.
