Desire for children

Preconception consultation

Do you have a desire to have a child but are not currently pregnant? Then you (together with your partner) are warmly welcome to our preconception consultation. We guide you through the process of becoming pregnant as healthily as possible.

If you wish to have your intrauterine device (IUD) removed due to your desire for a child, we can combine the appointment to remove the IUD with a preconception consultation with the midwife.

A healthy start of pregnancy

The midwife provides advice on becoming pregnant healthily. This includes nutritional and lifestyle advice, as well as adjustments to work or avoiding certain risks. Furthermore, you can come to us with questions about fertility and menstrual cycle. Additionally, we will discuss the care you may need during a potential pregnancy, for you to be as well-prepared as possible. Before a preconception consultation, we ask you to fill out the “Zwangerwijzer” (a questionnaire about your health status). The answers of this questionnaire will be part of the advices the midwife provides during the consultation.

Folic acid

The advice is to start taking 0.4-0.5mg of folic acid (vitamin B11) per day four weeks before you want to become pregnant. It is advisable to start earlier because it takes about four weeks for the extra folic acid to be absorbed into your body. You can stop taking folic acid from 10 weeks of pregnancy. Folic acid reduces the risk of having a child with a neural tube defect (open spine or skull), a cleft lip, or an open palate.

If you have epilepsy with certain medication or have had a previous child with a neural tube defect or cleft lip, it is the advise to supplement an increased dosage of folic acid. For an increased dosage prescription, you can ask your General Practitioner.
