Where would you like to give birth?
In the Netherlands you have the choice to give birth at home, in a birthing center, or in a hospital. The place where you feel most comfortable is the place where you are best able to give birth. For some, this may be at home, while others may feel more at ease in a birthing center or hospital. As midwives, we support births both at home, in a birthing center and in the hospital.
When labor begins, you call the emergency number. In most cases, our on-call midwife will initially come to your home and conduct medical checks. Once labor has progressed sufficiently, you decide where you want to give birth if you haven’t made that choice already. In case of a home birth, we’ll prepare for labour and call the maternity nurse for assistance during the last phase of labour. In case you opt for a birth center or hospital birth, we’ll call the option of your choice. Note that it might be possible that there is no availability at the birth center or hospital of your choice. In that case we will arrange a spot elsewhere.
At home
If you choose to give birth at home, the midwife will prepare her equipment for a home birth, and the maternity nurse will be called to assist. Home birth provides many women with a sense of calm and safety. The homely atmosphere allows many women to relax more easily, which has a positive effect on the progress of labor and generally reduces the likelihood of medical interventions. Research has shown that home birth for healthy women without risk factors is as safe as giving birth in the hospital.
Birthing center
In Amsterdam, there are two birthing centers where it is possible to give birth without a medical indication. The Bevalcentrum Oost (BCO) is located in the OLVG Oost on the same floor as the medical delivery rooms of the hospital. The Bevalcentrum Zuid (BCZ) is located at Kastelenstraat 107 in Amsterdam Zuid. This is a standalone birthing center not housed in a hospital. Both birthing centers have a homely atmosphere and birthing pools. At Bevalcentrum Zuid they also offer the option to use laughing gas/’gas and air’ for pain relief during labour.
Hospital
There are several hospitals in the area where you can give birth:
- OLVG Oost
- UMC location AMC
- Boven IJ hospital
- Amstelland hospital, Amstelveen
- Spaarne Gasthuis, Haarlem
- Zaans Medisch Centrum, Zaandam
